So much of 12 Monkeys is shot with the camera tilted, like the tripod caught the virus too. It’s a lot. The future scientists keep firing a confused prisoner through time with a plan that wouldn’t pass a group project, and the middle stretch wanders while everyone argues about who’s actually crazy. Then the cast saves it. Bruce Willis drops the action hero thing and plays Cole as a scared, sweaty guy who just wants to hear old songs on the radio and breathe real air. Brad Pitt goes full caffeinated chaos as Jeffrey, arms everywhere, talking at triple speed, and somehow it works. Madeleine Stowe has the hardest job, slowly realizing the patient in front of her might be right. $168.8 million worldwide for a movie this strange is wild. An 8.4 because the puzzle clicks hard at the end, even if the road there gets bumpy. $644 says the credits roll and you’re already scrubbing back to the opening scene.
What works: Bruce Willis playing scared instead of cool, Brad Pitt’s twitchy energy, and an ending that makes the opening scene hit completely different.
What doesn’t: The middle stretch loops on the same is-he-crazy argument for too long, and the tilted camera tricks get tiring fast.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants sci-fi that is grimy and paranoid, with a twist it actually earns, and who doesn’t mind rewinding.
The Army of the Twelve Monkeys was a red herring, and the real culprit is a lab assistant carrying the virus onto a plane. Cole is killed at the airport trying to stop him, and the boy watching in Cole’s recurring dream turns out to be young Cole himself.
In 2035, a deadly virus has pushed what is left of humanity underground, and prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) gets volunteered for a job nobody wants: go back in time and find out where it started. His only lead is a group called the Army of the Twelve Monkeys. The scientists miss their target, Cole lands in Baltimore in 1990, and nobody believes a word he says. He ends up in a mental hospital with psychiatrist Dr. Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe) and a very chatty patient named Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt). Terry Gilliam directs. One hundred twenty-nine minutes, zero reliable calendars.
