movie.guru Privacy Policy

The short version

No accounts. No ads. No third-party analytics or advertising scripts. We never sell or rent your information. We only collect personal information when you hand it over: your email address if you join the Weekly Roundup, and your name, email address and message if you use the contact form.

Weekly Roundup signups

When you sign up for the Weekly Roundup email, we store your email address, the page you signed up on, the consent wording you agreed to, a random unsubscribe code, and when you signed up or last changed your subscription. The list is kept in Cloudflare D1, a database run by Cloudflare, which hosts movie.guru.

Your email address is also passed to Buttondown, the service that sends the newsletter, along with the IP address you signed up from. We use your email address only to send the Weekly Roundup. Every issue has an unsubscribe link, and using it stops the emails.

Contact form

When you send a message through the contact page, we collect your name, your email address and your message. The message is stored in Cloudflare D1 and emailed to the site owner through Cloudflare Email Routing so it can be read and answered. We use it only to reply to you and keep track of the conversation.

To stop spam, each message is also saved with a scrambled code made from your IP address (a salted hash). It's used only to limit how many messages one visitor can send in an hour. The IP address itself is never stored.

Hosting and logs

movie.guru is hosted on Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare handles standard technical data, such as your IP address, browser type and the page you asked for, to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. Cloudflare's own privacy policy covers that.

The newsletter signup, unsubscribe link and contact form run on a small Cloudflare Worker, and Cloudflare's Workers logs are switched on for it. These logs record technical details about those requests and any errors, and we use them only to keep the site working.

Stored in your browser

movie.guru's own code doesn't set any cookies. It saves two small settings in your browser, and neither one is ever sent to us:

Spoiler Blocker setting. A local storage entry named mg-spoiler-shield remembers that you turned the Spoiler Blocker on. It's removed when you switch the Blocker off, or when you clear your browser data.

Revealed spoilers. A session storage entry named mg-spoilers remembers which spoilers you've uncovered in the current tab. Your browser clears it when you close the tab.

Trailers and other sites

Trailers are YouTube videos embedded in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode, from youtube-nocookie.com. When a trailer loads on a page, or when you press play, your browser connects to YouTube, and Google's privacy policy covers what happens there. When Where to Watch shows streaming service logos, those load from TMDB's image server. Posters, cast photos and the rest of the site load from movie.guru itself.

Links to other sites, like Fandango, JustWatch, IMDb or Rotten Tomatoes, take you somewhere with its own privacy policy.

Who else sees your information

Only the services that run movie.guru: Cloudflare (hosting, the database, logs and contact form email) and Buttondown (newsletter delivery). We'll also share information if the law requires it. That's the whole list.

Kids

movie.guru is kid-safe to read, with no swear words anywhere. But the site isn't directed at children under 13 for data collection, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you're under 13, please don't sign up for the Weekly Roundup or use the contact form. If you think a child under 13 has sent us information, let us know through the contact page and we'll delete it.

Getting your information deleted

We keep your signup while you're on the list, and contact messages for as long as we need them to reply and follow up. Unsubscribing stops the emails, but it doesn't erase your address from our records.

To have your email address, your messages or anything else we have about you deleted, ask through the contact page and include the email address you used. We'll delete it from our database and from Buttondown. You can also ask what we have on file about you, or ask us to correct it, the same way.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
