Your first watch of 1917 is mostly spent hunting for the hidden cuts, because the whole thing is built to look like one unbroken shot. Good luck. The bigger issue is that Will and Tom are pretty thin on paper, two decent guys with a deadline, and the famous British actors pop up every few miles like celebrity checkpoints. Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Benedict Cumberbatch: one scene each and a very nice coat. Then George MacKay starts running and none of that matters. The night stretch in the burning town looks like a painting somebody lit on fire. Sam Mendes makes the war feel close and exhausting without turning it into a thrill ride. It pulled $446.1 million worldwide, a lot for a movie whose best stretches barely have any talking. An 8.8 because the craft is unreal and the stakes stay human the entire time. $57.47 says you check the clock near the end and can’t believe how fast it went.
What works: The one-take illusion, the night sequence in the burning town, and George MacKay carrying the whole thing on exhausted shoulders.
What doesn’t: The two leads are thinly written, and the parade of famous officers in single scenes can feel like stops on a checklist.
Who it’s for: Anyone after a war movie that feels like being there, no history lecture required.
Blake is killed by a German pilot he just helped pull from a burning plane, and Schofield carries the order alone. He reaches the front line in time to stop the attack, finds Blake’s brother to tell him the news, and sits down under a tree, the same way the movie began.
April 1917, northern France. Two young British lance corporals, Will Schofield (George MacKay) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), get a near impossible job from General Erinmore (Colin Firth): cross enemy territory on foot and deliver an order calling off an attack set for the next day. If the message doesn't land in time, sixteen hundred soldiers walk straight into a trap, and Blake's brother (Richard Madden) is one of them. Sam Mendes shoots the whole journey to look like one continuous take. One hundred nineteen minutes, no visible cuts, no time to waste.
Anyone whose family has a war story worth remembering. Watch it on the biggest screen you can find.
