1992 sets a small heist thriller on the first night of the Los Angeles riots, and the real history is far bigger than the movie built around it. Tyrese Gibson plays Mercer, an ex-con trying to rebuild his life and his bond with his son on the day the Rodney King verdict lands. Elsewhere in the city, a father and son who barely get along are planning to rob the place where Mercer works, and as the unrest spreads, their paths cross. Gibson’s scenes with Christopher A’mmanuel are the most genuine thing here. The rest looks drab and gets hard to follow once the action starts, and Ray Liotta, in his last role on film, deserved better material. It holds a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences gave it an A minus CinemaScore. A 4.7 because the setting asks for more than a formula heist. $65.27 says you end up asking someone who lived in Los Angeles in 1992 what they remember about that week.
What works: Tyrese Gibson’s scenes with Christopher A’mmanuel have real feeling, and the film treats its father and son stories with sincerity.
What doesn’t: The look is drab, the action is hard to follow, and the heist plot leans on formula and has some glaring holes.
Who it’s for: Heist movie fans who don’t mind a familiar plot, and Ray Liotta fans who want to see his last film role.
The two families’ stories finally collide as the unrest spreads that first night. Ray Liotta’s final line, in his final film, is his character telling his son he’s sorry his best wasn’t enough.
Los Angeles, 1992, right as the verdict in the Rodney King case comes down. Mercer (Tyrese Gibson) is out of prison and working hard to build a steady life, mostly so he can be there for his son. Across town, a father and son with a rocky history decide the way to fix things is to plan a risky heist at Mercer's workplace. As unrest spreads across the city that first night, the two families cross paths. Ariel Vromen directs, with Scott Eastwood, plus Ray Liotta in what turned out to be his last film role. Ninety-three minutes, one very long night.
Anyone trying to start over while the world refuses to sit still.
