2 Fast 2 Furious has a title that sounds like a dare and a script that sounds like nobody took it. Vin Diesel sat this one out, so Paul Walker carries the sequel, in Miami, surrounded by so much neon the whole movie looks like a phone case. The plot is a basic undercover cop show. Cole Hauser plays Verone like a cologne ad with a temper. What saves it is Tyrese Gibson, playing Roman as a guy who is mad at Brian about everything forever, and their bickering is the real engine here. Ludacris shows up as Tej and looks thrilled to be there. Eva Mendes plays an agent the script keeps forgetting is an agent. The opening race over a rising bridge is goofy and great. It made $236.4 million worldwide on a reported $76M. A 4.5 because the cars are loud, the jokes are louder and the story is out of gas. $4,206 says you thank your next ride share driver with a ’bro’ and only notice after you shut the door.
What works: Tyrese Gibson and Paul Walker bicker like real old friends, and the opening race and the big swarm of cars pouring out of the garage are goofy fun.
What doesn’t: The villain is bland, the undercover plot is generic, and Eva Mendes gets a character the script keeps pushing to the side.
Who it’s for: Fans doing a full franchise rewatch, and anyone who wants loud early-2000s car candy with zero homework.
Brian and Roman flood the streets with a swarm of street racers to shake the cops, then launch their Camaro off a ramp onto Verone’s yacht. Verone gets arrested, Monica’s cover holds, and Brian and Roman quietly pocket some of the dirty money.
Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker) has left his LAPD badge behind and is laying low in Miami, street racing for cash, until one race ends with him in handcuffs. U.S. Customs agent Markham (James Remar) and Brian's old FBI boss Bilkins (Thom Barry) offer a way out: go undercover against Carter Verone (Cole Hauser), a slick crime boss, and his record gets wiped clean. Brian agrees on one condition: he picks his partner. He picks Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson), his childhood friend, who is still mad at him. Agent Monica Fuentes (Eva Mendes) is already inside. John Singleton directs. One hundred seven minutes, neon everywhere.
Anyone who knows what a nitrous button does. Please don't press it on the freeway.
