$331.3 million worldwide for a movie whose favorite joke is admitting it’s the same movie with a bigger budget. That joke lands a few times. After that, you’re just watching the same movie with a bigger budget. Ice Cube gets the best stretch by a mile, a slow-burn meltdown that’s the funniest scene in either film. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum still have that easy, bickering chemistry, now played like a couple that needs therapy, and Jenko falling head over heels for a jock named Zook is pretty funny. The college case is even thinner than the high school one, which is impressive. The end credits roll out a parade of fake future sequels that’s sharper than most of the runtime. A 6.6 because the team is still fun, but a sequel roasting sequels is still a sequel. $47 says you’d pay full price for at least one of those fake sequels.
What works: Ice Cube’s big meltdown, the bromance between Jenko and Zook, and the end credits gag that roasts a whole franchise in a few minutes.
What doesn’t: The meta joke about repeating the first movie wears thin, because it really does repeat the first movie beat for beat.
Who it’s for: Anybody who loved the first one and just wants more Schmidt and Jenko, rerun and all.
Maya turns out to be Captain Dickson’s daughter, and he finds out Schmidt has been dating her in the worst way possible. Mercedes is the Ghost’s daughter, and the partners take the Ghost down at spring break before the credits pitch an endless string of sequels.
Two years after their high school case, undercover cops Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) blow a big bust and get sent back to the undercover program, now across the street at 22 Jump Street. Captain Dickson (Ice Cube) has a fancier office and the same assignment, only bigger: enroll at a local college and find who's supplying a dangerous new drug on campus. Jenko clicks right away with football star Zook (Wyatt Russell). Schmidt joins the art crowd and meets Maya (Amber Stevens). Their partnership starts feeling like a rocky marriage. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller direct. One hundred twelve minutes, same plan, bigger budget.
Anyone who looks nineteen. These two do not.
