One caretaker’s keycard opens every door in the most guarded building in London, and the plot leans on that shortcut hard. 28 Weeks Later runs on people making the worst possible call at the worst possible moment. The opening, with Robert Carlyle making a split-second choice at a countryside hideout that he’ll never live down, is one of the tensest starts in modern horror. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo trades the first film’s lonely quiet for full-scale panic: snipers on rooftops, a locked shelter full of terrified people, and an army that loses control fast and then turns on everyone. Rose Byrne and Jeremy Renner are solid as the only adults with a conscience. The camera shakes so hard in the chaos that you’ll sometimes lose track of who’s who. It made $72.3 million worldwide on a reported $15M. A 6.7 because the panic is real and the plot needs too many bad decisions to get there. $6,844 says you spot a staff-only door this week and decide, very wisely, to leave it alone.
What works: The opening is terrifying, and the way order collapses into panic is fierce and well staged.
What doesn’t: The plot depends on a caretaker’s keycard and a pile of bad decisions, and the shaky camera blurs the chaos.
Who it’s for: Horror fans who liked 28 Days Later and want a bigger, faster, angrier sequel.
Andy carries the virus without getting sick, and Scarlet and Doyle both die protecting the kids on the way out of London. Flynn flies Tammy and Andy to France, and the final shot shows the infected running near the Eiffel Tower.
The rage virus tore through Britain, and the infected eventually starved. Twenty-eight weeks after the outbreak, an American-led NATO force starts bringing people back to a guarded safe zone in London. Don (Robert Carlyle), who barely got away from an attack on a countryside hideout early on, is already working there when his kids Tammy (Imogen Poots) and Andy (Mackintosh Muggleton) arrive. Army doctor Scarlet (Rose Byrne) and sniper Doyle (Jeremy Renner) are part of the team watching over everyone. Officially, it's safe. The kids miss home and sneak out of the zone to see their old house. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directs. Ninety-nine minutes, follow the curfew.
Anyone who reads the safety rules and actually follows them.
