There’s a Burger King in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, and it’s the stop people remember from a movie about magic doors into the past. That’s the problem in one sentence. Colin Farrell’s David rents a car from a strange little company, chatty GPS included, meets Margot Robbie’s Sarah at a wedding where she makes it clear she isn’t the romance type, and bumps into her again at that rest stop. Then the GPS starts steering them through doors in the woods and into their own memories: a lighthouse, an art museum, David’s high school musical. On paper it’s a dream: Kogonada directing, a Joe Hisaishi score, two of the most charming stars alive. On screen it’s solemn and talky, and the leads spend most of it quietly processing instead of sparking. It made $22.4 million worldwide on a reported $40 to $45 million. A 4.2 because the ingredients are lovely and the dish is bland. $1,431 says you rent a car this year and side-eye the GPS the whole drive.
What works: Farrell and Robbie are easy to watch, the doors-into-memory idea is a lovely hook, and the high school musical detour has some life.
What doesn’t: It’s too solemn to have fun with its premise and too sugary for the sad parts to land, and the Burger King plug is hard to ignore.
Who it’s for: Big Farrell and Robbie fans, and people who like their romances slow, wistful and full of long talks in cars.
After a fight and a lonely night at a motel, they go their separate ways, and the GPS sends each of them back to a moment from childhood. Sarah changes her mind, shows up at David’s door, tells him she loves him, and they walk inside together.
David (Colin Farrell) gets his car clamped, so he rents one from a very odd company, complete with a GPS that has a voice of its own (Jodie Turner-Smith). At a friend's wedding he meets Sarah (Margot Robbie), who doesn't buy into marriage at all. They bump into each other again at a rest stop, realize they rented from the same strange outfit, and hit the road together when her car won't start. Then the GPS starts steering them through mysterious doors that open onto places from their pasts. Kogonada directs. One hundred nine minutes, no refunds on the feelings.
Anyone who's ever trusted a GPS a little too much. Bring snacks for the road.
