Jack Black yells "chicken jockey," and theaters full of teenagers turned it into a sporting event. That line is the most memorable thing in A Minecraft Movie. Black’s Steve is a former doorknob salesman who found a magic orb and a crystal down in a mine, and the pair opens a doorway to the Overworld. Years later Jason Momoa’s Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison, a former ’80s game champ with a sinking store in Chuglass, Idaho, ends up with both after a storage auction. Two new-in-town siblings and a real estate agent with a mobile petting zoo tag along, and everybody tumbles through. From there it’s a fetch quest against Malgosha, a gold-hungry piglin ruler who can’t stand creativity. The plot is muddy and the characters get one trait each. Black and Momoa go so big you stop asking questions. It made $960.4 million worldwide. A 4.6 because the actors are having more fun than the script. $8,514 says you shout "chicken jockey" at the screen the second it happens, even if you’re watching alone.
What works: Jack Black and Jason Momoa commit completely, and their goofy energy keeps the movie moving even when the story stalls.
What doesn’t: The plot is confusing if you’ve never played the game, and almost everyone besides the two leads gets one trait and nothing else.
Who it’s for: Kids who know every block in the game and the parents willing to sit through a rowdy screening with them.
Henry uses an Ender Pearl to grab the orb back, the sun returns, and Malgosha’s army turns into zombies. Garrett, who seemed to go down saving everyone, turns out fine, and back home Steve meets Alex, the new owner of his old house.
Steve (Jack Black) ditches doorknob sales for a mining job and digs up an orb and a crystal that open a portal to the Overworld, a world made of blocks. Years later the orb lands with Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa), a washed-up gaming champ running a shaky store in small-town Idaho. New-in-town siblings Natalie (Emma Myers) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen), plus real estate agent Dawn (Danielle Brooks), get tangled up in it, and the whole crew gets yanked through. Jennifer Coolidge plays the vice principal on Henry's case. Jared Hess directs. One hundred one minutes, zero smooth edges.
Anyone who yelled "chicken jockey" in a theater. You know who you are.
