A Walk to Remember (2002)

Landon Carter goes from the meanest kid in Beaufort to a model boyfriend so fast the movie practically skips the middle. His friends are cardboard bullies, the dialogue sounds like it was cross-stitched on a pillow, and critics gave it 30% on Rotten Tomatoes for real reasons. IMDb voters gave it a 7.3 anyway, and I get it. Mandy Moore is the whole movie. She plays Jamie with a calm, unbothered confidence, a girl who doesn’t need the popular kids to sign off on who she is, and when she sings in the school play, the cynic in you goes quiet. Shane West is stiff early and much better once Landon starts trying. Landon working through Jamie’s list of things she wants to do is the sweetest stretch. It made $47.5 million worldwide on a reported $11.8M. A 5.4 because Moore makes the sincerity land even when the script leans on it way too hard. $644.55 says you hum the song from the school play all week and act like you have no idea where you heard it.
