Putting Jason Statham in a hard hat fools nobody, least of all the Russian mob. Levon Cade is an ex-Royal Marine running a crew in Chicago for the Garcia family, and when their daughter Jenny is kidnapped and the cops get nowhere, he says no to the rescue job. Then his blind buddy Gunny, played by David Harbour, talks him into it, and the film settles into a loop: Statham walks in, asks one question, and nobody else leaves upright. There’s a decent missing-person mystery in here, and director David Ayer and co-writer Sylvester Stallone rush right past it. Harbour is the most fun thing on screen, and Statham finds a little softness in the custody fight over his daughter. Then the mob, a biker gang and crooked cops line up to get flattened, and at 116 minutes the sameness sets in early. A 4.7 because Statham is reliable and the movie is on autopilot. $454 says the next time a contractor quotes you two weeks, you wonder what else he’s capable of.
What works: David Harbour’s blind ex-Raider steals his scenes, and the custody fight over Merry gives Statham something to play besides angry.
What doesn’t: The missing-person mystery gets flattened by beatdowns, and at nearly two hours the same interrogate-and-punch rhythm wears out fast.
Who it’s for: Statham completists who’d rather watch him lean on a bartender than solve a case.
Levon tracks Jenny to a biker compound and gets her out, and Jenny fights back against one of her captors on the way. The mob boss above Symon orders him to drop his revenge to protect the organization, and the film ends with Levon home at breakfast with Merry and Gunny.
Levon Cade (Jason Statham) used to be a Royal Marine. Now he is a construction foreman in Chicago who keeps his head down and fights for custody of his daughter Merry (Isla Gie). His boss Joe Garcia (Michael Peña) treats him like family. Then Joe's daughter Jenny (Arianna Rivas) is taken by a criminal ring, the police find nothing, and the Garcias ask Levon to bring her home. He wants the old life to stay buried. His blind friend Gunny Lefferty (David Harbour), a retired Marine Raider, tells him to do the right thing. David Ayer directs. One hundred sixteen minutes, one very overqualified foreman.
Anyone who needs a wall framed or a problem handled. He does both before lunch.
