Julia Roberts deserved a braver movie than After the Hunt. She plays Alma, a Yale philosophy professor up for tenure, with a star PhD student (Ayo Edebiri), a close friend down the hall (Andrew Garfield) and a husband at home (Michael Stuhlbarg). Then comes a serious accusation on a university campus, and Alma is caught between people she cares about while her tenure hangs in the balance. Roberts is superb, tightly wound and hard to read, and she holds the movie together while the script keeps losing its grip. Edebiri and Garfield do what they can with characters the writing never brings into focus. Luca Guadagnino shoots it with real craft, then ducks the hard calls he spent 138 minutes setting up. Opening crowds gave it a C-minus CinemaScore, and it made $9.44 million worldwide on a reported budget of $70 to 80 million. A 4.9 because the acting is sharp and the movie isn’t. $44.83 says you and whoever you watch it with land on opposite sides by the credits, and neither of you budges.
What works: Julia Roberts gives one of her best performances in years, and Guadagnino stages the tense conversations with real craft.
What doesn’t: It raises big questions and then backs away from all of them, and at 138 minutes the dodging gets tiring.
Who it’s for: Julia Roberts fans and anyone who likes a talky campus drama that starts arguments rather than settling them.
An epilogue jumps ahead several years: Alma has landed on her feet as a dean, and she and Maggie meet one more time at a diner to talk about how their lives turned out. Then Guadagnino himself calls cut from off-screen.
Alma Imhoff (Julia Roberts) is a respected philosophy professor at Yale, back from medical leave and up for tenure. At home there is her husband Frederik (Michael Stuhlbarg). At work there is her close friend and fellow professor Hank Gibson (Andrew Garfield), also up for tenure, and her star PhD student, Maggie Resnick (Ayo Edebiri). After a dinner party at Alma's place, Maggie comes to her with a serious accusation against Hank. Hank denies it. Now Alma is stuck in the middle, with her career and her friendships on the line. Luca Guadagnino directs. One hundred thirty-nine minutes, nobody gets off easy.
Anyone who likes a movie that keeps arguing with you on the ride home.
