Ali G: Who Iz I? runs on a joke that’s more than twenty years old, and critics noticed: 50% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 38 on Metacritic. They’re missing the point. The joke still lands. Sacha Baron Cohen writes, produces, stars and, for the first time, directs a feature, and he keeps it to a tight 89 minutes. It’s a mockumentary that stands on its own, so you don’t need to remember Ali G Indahouse, and Cohen drags a few faces back from Who Is America? for good measure. It’s funny from the first scene to the last, and it never gets mean enough to sour the room. Light, loud and dumb on purpose, in a puffer jacket the size of a small car. The one catch: if Ali G never worked for you, nothing here will change your mind. An 8.6 because it’s a nonstop laugh that knows exactly what it is. $683 says you catch yourself talking like Ali G at dinner this week and nobody laughs but you.
What works: It’s funny start to finish and stays light the whole way, with Cohen fully committed in his first feature as director.
What doesn’t: It’s the same joke Ali G has always told, so anyone who never liked the character gets nothing new.
Who it’s for: People who still quote Da Ali G Show and want 89 minutes of pure dumb fun.
There’s no big twist to spoil: it’s a mockumentary, and the fun is the ride, not the ending.
Ali G is back, and Sacha Baron Cohen wrote, produced, directed and stars in it, his first time directing a feature. It's a mockumentary, it stands on its own (not an Ali G Indahouse sequel), and Cohen also brings back characters from Who Is America? Eighty-nine minutes of Ali G in a puffer jacket the size of a small car.
Anyone who still quotes Ali G Indahouse and refuses to explain why.
