Wonderland should never feel boring, and this one does. Tim Burton took one of the strangest stories ever written and turned it into a chosen-one quest with armor and a prophecy, the least Wonderland idea possible. Everything is soaked in gray-green CGI mush. Johnny Depp’s Hatter swaps accents mid-sentence and somehow gets the most screen time while doing the least. Mia Wasikowska is stuck reacting to green screens and gets almost nothing to play. Helena Bonham Carter, though, is a riot as the Red Queen, a royal toddler mid-tantrum, and Alan Rickman’s voice as the caterpillar is the one thing in Underland that feels magical. Critics landed at 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, which feels generous. It still made $1.025 billion worldwide, proof that a famous title can carry anything. A 4.3 because a reported $200M budget bought a mountain of pixels and almost no wonder. $429 says you hit the Hatter’s big dance and look away in pure secondhand embarrassment.
What works: Helena Bonham Carter’s tantrum-throwing Red Queen and Alan Rickman’s voice as Absolem are genuinely fun.
What doesn’t: Burton turns Wonderland into a generic chosen-one battle quest drowned in murky CGI, and Alice herself barely has a personality.
Who it’s for: Younger kids who like big colorful creatures, and parents who just need something on in the background.
Alice accepts her role, puts on the armor and slays the Jabberwocky, and the White Queen banishes the Red Queen and the Knave. Back home, Alice turns down Hamish and sets sail on a trading voyage of her own.
Alice Kingsleigh (Mia Wasikowska) is nineteen, keeps having the same strange dream, and is about to get a public proposal at a garden party from a very dull young man named Hamish (Leo Bill). Instead of answering, she chases a rabbit in a waistcoat and drops down a hole into Underland. The locals argue over whether she is the right Alice. A blue caterpillar named Absolem (Alan Rickman) brings up a prophecy, the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) is thrilled to see her, and the big-headed Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) wants her caught. Tim Burton directs. One hundred eight minutes, curiouser and curiouser.
Anyone late for a very important date. Tea is always at six.
