How Alien Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Alien is basically a workplace safety video where everyone skips the training. Kane leans over a weird egg. The crew lets him back on board anyway. Somebody spends way too long looking for a cat. The opening stretch is slow too, all blinking monitors and people grumbling about bonuses, and impatient viewers bail before anything happens. Stay. Ridley Scott makes the Nostromo feel dripping, dim and full of corners, a ship that wants you gone, and the creature design is still the scariest thing anyone has put on film. Sigourney Weaver doesn’t play Ripley like an action hero. She plays her like the only adult in the room, which is cooler than any one-liner. The dinner scene is legendary for a reason. A 9.5 because it’s tense, gorgeous and patient in a way almost no horror movie is anymore. $79 says you hear a cat meow in a dark hallway this month and freeze solid.

What works: Sigourney Weaver’s no-nonsense Ripley, a ship that feels grimy and real, and a creature design that still hasn’t been topped.

What doesn’t: The opening stretch moves slow enough to lose impatient viewers, and a few crew members exist mostly to make bad decisions.

Who it’s for: Horror fans who like dread more than jump scares, and anyone who has ever worked for a company that didn’t care about them.

Spoilers

Ash turns out to be a company android with orders to bring the creature home, crew expendable. Everyone but Ripley and Jones the cat is killed, and she blows up the Nostromo, then finds the creature hiding in the escape shuttle and blasts it out the airlock.

Alien's Blurbs
About me:

The commercial towing ship Nostromo is hauling ore back to Earth when its computer, Mother, wakes the seven-person crew early. A strange signal is coming from a small, stormy planetoid, and company rules say they have to check it out. Captain Dallas (Tom Skerritt) heads down with Kane (John Hurt) and Lambert (Veronica Cartwright), while warrant officer Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) stays aboard with science officer Ash (Ian Holm) and engineers Parker (Yaphet Kotto) and Brett (Harry Dean Stanton). Kane wanders a little too deep into an abandoned ship. Ridley Scott keeps the lights low and the hallways long. One hundred sixteen minutes, keep your helmet on.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who thinks the crew should have stayed in hypersleep. Cat people welcome.
