Is it still whimsical if the heroine sneaks into a grocer’s apartment to swap his slippers, mess with his light bulbs and rewire his speed dial? Amélie Poulain is the sweetest menace in Paris. The movie says the grocer had it coming. He kinda did. It’s still a lot. Jean-Pierre Jeunet paints Montmartre in so much green and gold that the whole city looks dipped in honey and pesto, and by the hour mark you might catch a sugar headache. Audrey Tautou makes it work with a face that’s half mischief, half panic, and Mathieu Kassovitz’s photo booth collector is the perfect shy weirdo to chase. The chalk-arrow scavenger hunt and her dad’s globe-trotting garden gnome are pure joy. It made $175.6 million worldwide on a reported $10M. An 8.8 because it’s a love letter you can actually feel, even when it licks the envelope a little too hard. $25.18 says you skip a stone on the next pond or puddle you walk past and treat it like a big moment.
What works: Audrey Tautou’s mischievous face, Montmartre glowing in green and gold, and a chalk-arrow treasure hunt that’s pure joy.
What doesn’t: The whimsy never lets up, and her pranks on the grocer get a bit cruel for a feel-good movie.
Who it’s for: Romantics who love Paris, quiet weirdos, and anyone who has ever planned a small surprise for a stranger.
After almost letting Nino slip away out of fear, Amélie gets a push from her neighbor, the painter Dufayel, and opens her door to find Nino standing there. They end the film riding through Paris together on his scooter.
Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tautou) grew up lonely and dreamy, and now she waits tables at a café in Montmartre, Paris. One night in 1997, she finds an old tin box of a boy's treasures hidden behind a loose tile in her apartment. She decides to track down its owner, and if returning it makes him happy, she will start secretly fixing other people's lives too. Then she keeps crossing paths with Nino Quincampoix (Mathieu Kassovitz), a shy guy who collects torn photo booth pictures, and suddenly her own life is the one that needs fixing. Jean-Pierre Jeunet directs. One hundred twenty-three minutes, crack the crème brûlée.
Shy people who skip stones and crack crème brûlée with a spoon. Leave clues.
