Somebody looked at a 1947 John Wayne Western and decided what it really needed was Zachary Levi. That’s not a knock on Levi, he’s a likable lead, but the numbers say the gamble didn’t land. Critics gave it a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, it sits at a 3.3 movie.guru score, and only 463 people had rated it on IMDb at last count. It made $3.3 million domestic, which is rough for anything with Tommy Lee Jones in a marshal’s hat. The bones are sturdy: a gunslinger, a woman whose faith gets under his skin, and a slow change of heart. That kind of story works when a movie trusts the quiet moments, and the reviews suggest this one leaned on the sermon instead. Neal McDonough on villain duty means the scowling is in good hands, at least. A 4.1 because the setup is classic and the reception is not. $1,238 says you end up watching the 1947 original afterward just to see what everyone keeps comparing it to.
What works: Tommy Lee Jones as a seen-it-all marshal and a simple redemption setup that has worked for generations.
What doesn’t: Critics landed on a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it barely made a dent at the box office.
Who it’s for: Western fans curious about a faith-friendly remake, and anyone who loves Tommy Lee Jones in a hat.
A remake of the 1947 John Wayne Western. Zachary Levi plays the gunslinger, Meg Fraser the woman whose faith gets in his way, and Tommy Lee Jones the marshal who has heard every story before. Neal McDonough rides in as the trouble. Julio Quintana directs for Angel Studios. Ninety-eight minutes, one six-shooter, one change of heart.
Anyone who watched Westerns with their grandpa on Sunday afternoons.
