Ant-Man and the Wasp is basically a game of keep-away with a laboratory that shrinks into rolling luggage. Three different groups want the suitcase building, and the movie spends 118 minutes passing it around like a hot potato. Ghost is a villain with a sad, sympathetic backstory and almost no time to use it. Walton Goggins plays a tech dealer who exists mostly to show up and be smug, which he nails. The good news: Paul Rudd under house arrest is peak Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly finally gets the suit and the best fights, and Michael Peña’s truth serum ramble is the funniest scene in the film. The giant Hello Kitty candy dispenser in the car chase is dumb in the best way. It made $622.7 million worldwide, solid money for a palate cleanser. A 6.3 because it’s a breezy snack with a villain who deserved her own movie and a plot that’s mostly errands. $77 says you try to describe the truth serum scene to someone and end up doing the whole Luis voice.
What works: Paul Rudd under house arrest, Evangeline Lilly’s fights, and Luis’s truth serum ramble.
What doesn’t: Ghost is a sympathetic villain with almost no screen time, and the plot is mostly running errands.
Who it’s for: Marvel fans who want a light, goofy palate cleanser between the heavy crossover movies.
They bring Janet back from the quantum realm, and she helps heal Ghost. Then the mid-credits scene ties into the snap: Hank, Hope and Janet turn to dust, leaving Scott stranded in the quantum realm.
Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) is days away from finishing two years of house arrest, and he's bored out of his mind. Then he has a strange dream about Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), lost in the subatomic quantum realm for thirty years, and calls her husband Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). Next thing he knows, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) has snatched him. Hank and Hope are building a tunnel to bring Janet home, but a shady dealer named Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins) and a masked thief called Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) both want their lab. Peyton Reed directs. One hundred eighteen minutes, one ankle monitor.
Anyone who can keep track of a lab that shrinks into a rolling suitcase.
