Every heist movie needs a great mark, and Ant-Man got a bald guy in a business suit whose evil plan is selling a different suit. Corey Stoll does his best, but Yellowjacket is basically a quarterly earnings report with lasers. Everything around him is a blast though. Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang like a guy who can’t believe they let him in the building, Michael Douglas brings real grumpy mentor energy, and Michael Peña’s Luis tells stories so long and so detailed that the movie has to lip-sync them for him. One big fight happens on a kid’s toy train set, and cutting from huge explosions to a tiny train tipping over on a bedroom floor is the funniest action gag in Marvel. It made $519.3 million worldwide on a reported $130M to $169.3M, not bad for a hero the size of a crumb. A 7.1 because the villain is a snooze and everything else is a charming little heist. $12.07 says you start telling weekend stories the way Luis would and nobody gets a word in.
What works: Paul Rudd’s charm, Michael Peña’s lip-synced storytelling, and a toy train fight that’s the best size gag Marvel ever pulled off.
What doesn’t: Yellowjacket is a forgettable corporate villain whose whole evil plan is selling a suit.
Who it’s for: People who like their superhero movies small, funny and shaped like a heist.
To stop Yellowjacket, Scott shrinks past the safe limit into the quantum realm and barely finds his way back. In a credits scene, Hank finally shows Hope a new Wasp suit and admits she’s ready.
Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) just got out of prison, and he can't even keep a job scooping ice cream. He wants to be a real dad to his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson), but his ex-wife Maggie (Judy Greer) and her cop fiancé Paxton (Bobby Cannavale) need proof first. So when his chatty former cellmate Luis (Michael Peña) pitches one more burglary, Scott says yes. Inside a fancy safe he finds a strange old suit that shrinks him to the size of an ant. Its owner, scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), has a job in mind. Peyton Reed directs. One hundred seventeen minutes, tiny hero, big heist.
Anyone who knows a guy who knows a guy. Luis will tell you the whole story.
