Third movie, same jokes, and you can hear the series breathing hard. Goldmember is the weakest villain Mike Myers has built, a Dutch roller disco owner with a handful of catchphrases and nowhere to take them, and the trip back to 1975 is mostly an excuse for wigs and platform shoes. Then Michael Caine walks in as Nigel Powers, cool and crisp, and suddenly there’s a real movie star in the room. His father-son scenes with Myers have a warmth the rest of the movie skips. Beyoncé Knowles gives Foxxy Cleopatra a confident, stylish swagger, though the script hands her little beyond poses and one-liners. Dr. Evil and Mini-Me leading a musical number inside a prison is the best thing here by a mile. Seth Green’s Scott finally gets an arc. It made $296.9 million worldwide on a reported $63M. A 4.6 because Caine and Dr. Evil carry it and the rest is a rerun. $8,651 says you call something groovy out loud this week and nobody in the room can tell if you’re joking.
What works: Michael Caine’s Nigel Powers and Dr. Evil’s prison musical number are the high points, and Seth Green finally gets more to play.
What doesn’t: Most of the jokes are reruns from the first two movies, and Goldmember is a thin, repetitive villain who never earns his spot in the title.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first two Austin Powers movies who just want Dr. Evil and Mini-Me one more time.
Nigel finally admits Austin and Dr. Evil are long-lost brothers, separated as kids, so Dr. Evil switches to the good side. Goldmember is caught, and Scott, fed up with his dad going soft, steps up as the new villain.
Austin Powers (Mike Myers) finally catches Dr. Evil (also Myers) and gets knighted by the Queen for it, but his famous spy dad, Nigel Powers (Michael Caine), skips the ceremony. Then Nigel gets kidnapped. The trail leads to Goldmember (Myers again), a Dutch villain obsessed with gold who is hiding out in 1975. Austin hops in a time machine, lands at a roller disco in New York and teams up with his old flame, FBI agent Foxxy Cleopatra (Beyoncé Knowles). Mini-Me (Verne Troyer) and Scott Evil (Seth Green) are back too. Jay Roach directs. Ninety-four minutes, four Mike Myers characters.
Anyone who can do the Dr. Evil pinky without being asked.
