The second Austin Powers is a sketch show wearing a spy movie’s velvet suit, and the plot (a time machine, a stolen mojo, a lair inside the Space Needle) is just the hanger. Some bits kill. A lot of bits are reruns of the first movie, and the gross-out stretches make 95 minutes feel longer than they are. Then Dr. Evil walks in and the whole thing levels up. Mike Myers plays him like a dad who just discovered air quotes, Verne Troyer’s Mini-Me gets the biggest laughs without saying a single word, and Seth Green’s deadpan Scott is the secret weapon. Heather Graham gets a costume budget, not a character. Audiences turned up anyway: $313.7 million worldwide on a reported $33 million. A 6.1 because Dr. Evil is a comedy legend and Austin is coasting in his own sequel. $96.06 says you do the pinky to the corner of your mouth at someone this week and swear it was an accident.
What works: Dr. Evil, Mini-Me and Scott turn every lair scene into the best sketch of the night, and the Jerry Springer bit still lands.
What doesn’t: Too many jokes are reruns of the first movie, and the gross-out stretches drag the pace down hard.
Who it’s for: Fans of the first one who still quote Dr. Evil at work, and anyone up for a goofy sixties-flavored comedy night.
On Dr. Evil’s moon base, Austin flushes Mini-Me into space, then uses the time machine to jump ten minutes back so he can save Felicity and the world at once. His mojo is lost for good, but Felicity tells him he never needed it, and back in 1969 Dr. Evil fishes Mini-Me out of space and swears revenge.
It's 1999, and Austin Powers (Mike Myers) is barely used to the present when his honeymoon goes sideways. Dr. Evil (also Myers) is back from space with a pint-sized clone called Mini-Me (Verne Troyer), a sulky teenage son, Scott (Seth Green), and a scheme to slip back to 1969 and steal Austin's mojo, the secret ingredient behind all that swagger. Without it, Austin is just a guy in a velvet suit. So he borrows a time machine, heads for the swinging sixties and teams up with CIA agent Felicity (Heather Graham). Jay Roach directs. Ninety-five minutes, one very groovy time machine.
Anyone who can do the pinky to the corner of the mouth on the first try.
