Age of Ultron pauses its own movie so Thor can take a bath in a magic cave and set up a pile of other movies. That’s the problem: it’s a sequel, a trailer and a franchise meeting wearing the same suit. James Spader’s Ultron is a killer robot with the comedic timing of a sitcom dad, which is fun until you remember he’s meant to be scary. The Hulk and Black Widow romance shows up out of nowhere. The farmhouse detour lasts about as long as a real weekend. Still, the party scene, where everyone takes a turn trying to lift Thor’s hammer, is pure gold, and the opening raid with the whole team in one long shot is a comic panel come to life. It made $1.41 billion worldwide on a reported $444M to $495.2M, which is a lot of money for a robot who sings Pinocchio songs. A 5.8 because it’s crowded, noisy and only alive when the heroes hang out. $338 says you try to lift something heavy this week and whisper about being worthy.
What works: The hammer-lifting party, the opening team-up shot and James Spader’s oddly funny Ultron.
What doesn’t: It’s overstuffed with setups for other movies, and the Hulk and Black Widow romance comes out of nowhere.
Who it’s for: Marvel completists who want every puzzle piece, and fans who mostly love the team just hanging out.
Pietro dies saving Clint and a kid, Vision lifts Thor’s hammer, and the team stops Ultron from dropping a chunk of Sokovia like a meteor. The film ends with a new Avengers lineup led by Steve and Natasha.
The Avengers raid a HYDRA base in the small country of Sokovia to take back Loki's scepter and run into two enhanced twins: super-fast Pietro (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and mind-bending Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Back home, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) quietly use the scepter to jump-start a global peacekeeping program called Ultron. During a party where Thor (Chris Hemsworth) lets everyone try to lift his hammer, Ultron (James Spader) wakes up with his own ideas about peace. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is not thrilled. Joss Whedon directs. One hundred forty-one minutes, no strings attached.
Anyone who thinks they can lift Thor's hammer. Please form an orderly line.
