Back to the Past sat on a shelf for years before reaching theaters, and it plays like a reunion special still waiting on its second draft. It’s a legacy sequel to the TV series A Step into the Past, and it leans almost entirely on that show’s fans. The villain is Ken, the real inventor of the time machine, who did decades behind bars for someone else’s cover-up and now storms the Warring States period with mercenaries and modern guns, aiming to grab the Qin throne. Great hook. Ken himself is cardboard, though, and the plot drowns in hostage swaps and high-tech disguises that let people impersonate the king. With Sammo Hung running the action, the gunfights are weirdly ordinary. Louis Koo and Raymond Lam are much better actors now than on TV, and the nostalgia does real work. It made $15 million worldwide on a reported $45M. A 4.1 because old fans get a warm hug and everyone else gets homework. $269.15 says you grab a notepad by the halfway mark to track who’s pretending to be the king.
What works: Louis Koo and Raymond Lam slip back into their old roles with real maturity, and the nostalgia for the original series genuinely lands.
What doesn’t: Ken is a generic villain, the dialogue is flat, and the plot’s disguises and double-crosses get convoluted fast.
Who it’s for: Fans of A Step into the Past who have waited a long time to see Louis Koo and Raymond Lam back in costume.
At Hangu Pass the real king and Ken’s impostor face off in front of the Qin troops, the device Ken needs to get home is destroyed, and his scheme falls apart. The emperor spares Siu-lung and has the official record rewritten as a royal search for the elixir of immortality, and a post-credits alternate ending pulls key Qin figures into modern Hong Kong.
Back in 1999, Hong Kong cop Hong Siu-lung (Louis Koo) rode a time machine into the Warring States period and never came home. Ken (Michael Miu), the guy who actually invented the machine, took the blame and spent more than two decades locked up. Now it's 2025, and Ken wants payback on a historic scale. He rounds up his daughter Galie (Bai Baihe), his brother-in-law Phil (Timmy Hung) and some mercenaries, fires the machine back up, and heads two thousand years into the past to take the Qin throne for himself. Ng Yuen-fai and Jack Lai direct. One hundred seven minutes, zero respect for the timeline.
Anyone who can explain the time machine paperwork. Historians, please stay calm.
