Whole movie looks like it was filmed in a basement that smells like wet carpet. Creepy to the bone from minute one. Some of the shots are legit nuts, I rewound a couple just to make sure I saw what I saw. Kept me tense the whole time, shoulders up by my ears waiting on a jump scare that honestly never really came. Problem is the story. Somewhere around the middle it kinda gave up and just started walking around the set. Cool house, nobody home. I’d tell a buddy to watch it for the vibes and then tell him to stop texting me asking what happened. $50 says you finish it and go “wait that’s it??”
What works: The look. Wet carpet yellow, endless empty rooms, and a few shots so strange you’ll rewind them.
What doesn’t: The story runs out of road around the middle, and the movie just wanders the set until it ends.
Who it’s for: Anyone who fell down the Backrooms rabbit hole online and wants to see it on a big screen.
Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) runs a furniture store in San Jose, and the basement has a door it should not have. Behind it: an endless maze of yellow, buzzing, empty office rooms, and something living in them. Clark and his employees go in to explore. His therapist, Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve), goes in after him. One hundred ten minutes, zero exits.
Anyone who knows where the exit is. Bring almond water.
