Batman whips out his own credit card in this movie, with a little bat on it, and that’s not even the dumbest thing in the first half hour. Batman & Robin plays like a toy commercial that got lost and wandered into a theater. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze can’t finish a sentence without a cold pun, and by the tenth one you’ll want to file a complaint. George Clooney smiles through the whole thing like he’s waiting for someone to say cut. The heroes ice skate with blades that pop out of their boots. Bane is reduced to a grunting bodyguard. Uma Thurman is the only person who understands the assignment, playing Poison Ivy like an old Hollywood diva, and she’s legit funny. Alfred’s illness gives the movie exactly one sincere thread. It holds an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $238.3 million worldwide on a reported $125M to $160M. A 2.3 because Thurman tries and the rest is plastic. $2,594 says somebody says the word chill around you this week and you groan before they finish the sentence.
What works: Uma Thurman is the only one playing the right kind of camp, and Alfred’s illness gives the movie a single sincere thread.
What doesn’t: The jokes are nonstop cold puns, the action looks plastic, and George Clooney seems to be waiting for the director to call cut.
Who it’s for: Bad movie night crews who want to yell at the screen together and keep score of the puns.
Barbara becomes Batgirl, Freeze turns the Gotham Observatory into a giant freeze ray, and the heroes thaw the city. Batman shows Freeze that Ivy was the one who hurt his wife, Freeze hands over a cure for Alfred, and Freeze and Ivy end up sharing a cell in Arkham.
Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (Chris O'Donnell) are a team now, and the partnership is already getting frosty. Literally: Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger), once the scientist Victor Fries, is chilling Gotham one diamond heist at a time, wearing a cold suit he needs to survive. Meanwhile botanist Pamela Isley (Uma Thurman) gets a toxic makeover in a jungle lab, becomes Poison Ivy, and heads to Gotham with a hulking bodyguard named Bane. Alfred's niece Barbara (Alicia Silverstone) drops by Wayne Manor too. Joel Schumacher directs. One hundred twenty-five minutes, every line an ice pun.
Anyone who can handle ice puns at every temperature. Dress warm.
