Who told Tommy Lee Jones he was in a cackling contest with Jim Carrey? He enters it and loses badly, since nobody out-cackles Jim Carrey in 1995. That’s the whole problem: two villains doing the same loud bit, one of them in a question mark unitard bouncing off the walls. Two-Face is a second, angrier Riddler. Val Kilmer is a fine Batman who mostly stands still while the scenery screams at him. Nicole Kidman plays a psychologist with a crush on a cape, and the script thinks that’s a personality. Chris O’Donnell’s Robin is a furious circus kid with a motorcycle, and he gets the most human moments. Gotham looks like a pinball machine. The story keeps pausing for therapy talk about Bruce’s parents, a strange speed bump in a movie this loud. It made $336.6 million worldwide on a reported $100M. A 4.4 because Carrey is a riot and everything around him is a glow stick. $67.99 says you flip a coin to pick dinner tonight and quietly overrule it when it lands the wrong way.
What works: Jim Carrey’s Riddler is pure manic energy, and Chris O’Donnell’s angry young Robin brings the only real feelings.
What doesn’t: Two-Face is just a louder copy of the Riddler, and the neon chaos buries every serious moment, including Bruce’s flashbacks.
Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up on nineties Batman toys and wants to see the movie that sold them.
The Riddler learns Batman’s identity with his mind-reading box and wrecks the Batcave. In the finale, Batman smashes the box, which scrambles the Riddler’s mind, saves both Chase and Robin, and tosses a handful of coins that make Two-Face lose his footing for good. Nygma ends up in Arkham, convinced he’s Batman.
Gotham has a fresh pair of problems. Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones), once district attorney Harvey Dent, flips a coin before every move and blames Batman for everything. And Edward Nygma (Jim Carrey), a Wayne Enterprises inventor whose brain-beaming TV gadget gets turned down by Bruce Wayne (Val Kilmer), takes it very personally and starts mailing riddles. Add psychologist Dr. Chase Meridian (Nicole Kidman), who is very curious about the Bat, and circus acrobat Dick Grayson (Chris O'Donnell), whose family gets caught in Two-Face's chaos. Joel Schumacher directs. One hundred twenty-one minutes, neon on every surface.
Anyone good at riddles. Neon is optional but strongly encouraged.
