How Beast Performed
movie guru's TLDR

You can call every round of Beast before the opening bell: retired legend, brother in trouble, gruff old coach, unbeatable champ. It checks every box on the one-last-fight card and never adds a new one. Daniel MacPherson plays Patton James, an MMA great who traded the cage for a commercial fishing boat, until his brother lands in danger and pulls him back in. Russell Crowe plays Sammy, the old coach he reunites with, and Crowe co-wrote the script too, so you know he believes in this stuff. The last bout is in ONE Championship against the reigning champ, Xavier Grau, played by Bren Foster, and the crew filmed during a real ONE event at Bangkok’s Impact Arena, which is a smart way to borrow a real crowd. Critics were much warmer than audiences, with an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes while regular viewers mostly shrugged. It runs 114 minutes. A 4.8 because the formula is sturdy and it’s still a formula. $28.98 says you walk past a seafood counter this week and wonder which fisherman could take you in a fight.

What works: Shooting inside a real ONE Championship event gives the big fight a genuine arena feel, and critics were mostly kind to it.

What doesn’t: The story is a by-the-numbers comeback template, and nothing in the setup will surprise anyone who has seen a boxing movie.

Who it’s for: MMA fans and people who never get tired of the one-last-fight story.

Spoilers

There’s no big twist. Everything builds to Patton’s final ONE Championship bout against Xavier Grau, with his brother’s safety riding on how it goes.

Beast's Blurbs
About me:

Patton James (Daniel MacPherson) used to be an MMA legend. These days he works as a commercial fisherman and the fight life is behind him. Then his brother ends up in danger, and Patton gets pulled right back into the cage. He reunites with his old coach Sammy (Russell Crowe) and commits to one final bout in ONE Championship, against the reigning champ Xavier Grau (Bren Foster). Tyler Atkins directs, Crowe co-wrote the script, and a key scene was shot at a real ONE event in Bangkok. One hundred thirteen minutes, gloves back on.

Who I'd like to meet:

Fishermen with a mean left hook. Coaches who never stopped believing.
