Beetlejuice Beetlejuice spends its first half hour setting out game pieces: a ghost-hunting TV show, a funeral, a smarmy boyfriend, a skeptical teen, an afterlife detective, a soul-draining ex-wife. Hang in there. Winona Ryder’s Lydia now hosts Ghost House, and her daughter Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega with expert-level gloom, thinks her mom’s ghost talk is fake. A death in the family drags them back to Winter River, where Lydia’s producer boyfriend Rory starts pushing for a Halloween wedding. Down in the Netherworld, Betelgeuse runs a call center staffed by shrunken heads, which may be the most Tim Burton sentence ever typed. Willem Dafoe plays Wolf Jackson, a former action star now working as an afterlife cop. Ryder is the quiet standout, and Keaton still crackles, though the gags feel safer this time. The handmade effects are a treat. It made $452 million worldwide. A 6.1 because the weirdness is back even if the bite isn’t. $853 says you dig a black-and-white striped shirt out of your closet before Halloween and call it a coincidence.
What works: Ryder and Ortega give the family story a real pulse, and the handmade effects and the unhinged wedding finale feel like vintage Burton.
What doesn’t: The opening crams in so many characters and subplots that it takes ages to get going, and the edge of the original has been filed down.
Who it’s for: Fans of the original who want a Halloween movie night the teens in the house will actually sit through.
Astrid’s new friend Jeremy turns out to be a ghost who wants to swap places with her, and her late dad Richard helps her and Lydia escape the afterlife. At the wedding, Rory admits he only wanted Lydia’s money, a sandworm swallows him and Delores, and Astrid finds the loophole that cancels Betelgeuse’s marriage contract.
Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) grew up and got her own TV show, Ghost House, all about the paranormal. Her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) thinks ghosts are fake and figures her mom is too. Lydia has already spotted someone in her studio audience she hoped never to see again: Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton). Then bad family news from her stepmom Delia (Catherine O'Hara) sends Lydia and Astrid back to Winter River, the little town where all the weirdness started. Somewhere in the afterlife, a detective named Wolf Jackson (Willem Dafoe) is on duty. Tim Burton directs. One hundred four minutes, and nobody say his name three times.
Goths of every generation. Bring your best Day-O dance moves.
