Ben-Hur runs 212 minutes, opens with an overture and stops for an intermission, so plan this one like a road trip. Charlton Heston plays Judah like a statue that learned to frown, all posture and booming voice, and some of his big speeches land with a thud. The movie also slows down a lot after the chariot race. None of that sinks it. The galley sequence, with Jack Hawkins calling for more speed while the rowers strain below deck, is legit thrilling. Stephen Boyd’s Messala is a great rival because he once loved Judah like a brother. Then comes the chariot race, still one of the most jaw-dropping things ever put on film, all thundering hooves and flying dust. The story of Jesus runs alongside Judah’s, and William Wyler handles it with reverence: we never see his face, only his kindness. It made $74 million domestic on a reported $15.2M. A 9.1 because the grandest epic of its era still hits. $82.76 says you lean into every turn of the chariot race like you’re the one holding the reins.
What works: The chariot race and the galley sequence are still thrilling, and the faith story is told gently, with Jesus seen only from behind.
What doesn’t: Heston can be stiff in the big speeches, and the last hour after the race slows to a crawl.
Who it’s for: Anyone with a free afternoon and a big TV who wants to see what an old-school epic really looks like.
Messala is badly hurt in the race, and with his last breath he tells Judah that his mother and sister are alive in a leper colony. During the Crucifixion, Judah finally lets go of his hatred, and his mother and sister are healed.
Jerusalem, AD 26. Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) is a wealthy Jewish prince living with his mother Miriam (Martha Scott) and sister Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell). His childhood best friend Messala (Stephen Boyd) comes home as a Roman tribune and asks Judah to name names among his own people. Judah says no. Not long after, a loose roof tile spooks the new governor's horse, and Messala uses the accident to ship Judah off to row in the galleys and lock up his family. William Wyler directs. Two hundred twelve minutes, plus intermission, plus one legendary chariot race.
Anyone with strong arms and a long memory. Chariot license preferred.
