For about an hour, Bhooth Bangla is a haunted house party, and then it spends the rest of its very long runtime on the cleanup. Priyadarshan reunites with Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav for a horror comedy set in the Acharya mansion, where a demon named Vadhusur is said to prey on brides, and Arjun plans to restore the place for his sister Meera’s wedding. The early stretch has that old-school Priyadarshan chaos and some real laughs. Then the backstory piles up, the creatures look gimmicky, and the climax goes on and on. Tabu and Jisshu Sengupta are wasted in roles that needed far more room. A lot of the humor feels dated, and at well over two and a half hours, the runtime haunts the place more than the demon does. Critics gave it 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 3.8 because the first hour is fun and everything after it drags. $101 says the next wedding invitation you get, you check the start time before you check the menu.
What works: The first half has some genuinely fun, chaotic Priyadarshan energy, and the veteran comic cast still knows how to land a gag.
What doesn’t: The second half sinks under a muddled backstory, gimmicky creatures and a climax that runs far too long, and Tabu is badly underused.
Who it’s for: Fans of Priyadarshan’s earlier horror comedies who want the old gang back together and don’t mind a very long sit.
Arjun’s grandfather, Guruji, faked his own death and is the real villain, and the man possessed by Vadhusur turns out to be Arjun’s biological father, which lets Arjun use his bloodline to stop him and save Meera. Priya is revealed to be the ghost of her twin sister Chitra, and the old mystic telling the story at the railway platform is Arjun himself, years later.
Arjun Acharya (Akshay Kumar) and his sister Meera (Mithila Palkar) inherit their grandfather's mansion, and Arjun wants it fixed up in time for Meera's wedding. The caretaker, Shantaram (Asrani), has warnings. So does local legend: the demon Vadhusur, whose own wedding day ended badly, is said to haunt the Acharya mansion and go after new brides. On the drive out, Arjun pulls a writer named Priya (Wamiqa Gabbi) from a crash while she searches for her missing sister. Priyadarshan directs, with Paresh Rawal and Tabu along for the ride. One hundred sixty-four minutes, lights on please.
Wedding planners with nerves of steel. Bring extra candles.
