How does a movie this gorgeous end on a fight that looks like an unfinished video game? Hold that thought, because everything before it is stacked. Chadwick Boseman plays T’Challa with a calm that makes him feel like an actual king. Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger is the rare Marvel villain with an argument you can’t fully shake, and he plays it with so much hurt the room goes quiet. Letitia Wright’s Shuri roasts her big brother like it’s her full-time job, and Danai Gurira’s Okoye could end a fight by raising one eyebrow. The casino fight in Busan is the best action in the movie, one smooth, wild swirl. Ryan Coogler cares more about family and history than lasers, which is why it sticks. It made $1.35 billion worldwide and scored a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. An 8.0 because the story and the villain are top tier and the effects tap out at the worst possible moment. $339 says you cross your arms over your chest this week and somebody does it right back.
What works: Killmonger is a villain with a real argument, and Wakanda, Shuri and Okoye give the movie more personality than most of the franchise.
What doesn’t: The big final battle is rubbery CGI that looks unfinished next to the rest of the movie, and it drags the energy down at the worst time.
Who it’s for: People who want a superhero movie with a real family drama at its center and a villain worth arguing about.
Killmonger turns out to be T’Challa’s cousin, beats him in ritual combat and takes the throne. T’Challa comes back and defeats him, Killmonger chooses death over prison, and T’Challa decides to open Wakanda up to the world.
T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) comes home to Wakanda to be crowned king. The rest of the world thinks Wakanda is a small farming country. In reality it is the most advanced nation on Earth, built on a secret supply of the wonder metal vibranium. T'Challa has his sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) building his gear, General Okoye (Danai Gurira) at his side, and the spy Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o) keeping him honest. Then word comes that arms dealer Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis) is selling stolen vibranium in Busan, with a stranger named Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) close behind. Ryan Coogler directs. One hundred thirty-four minutes, long live the king.
Anyone who can keep up with Shuri in the lab. Nobody can, but try.
