Slow. Blade Runner 2049 runs 164 minutes and strolls through every one of them like an art gallery with no exit signs. If you’re tired, it will win. Ryan Gosling plays K with almost no expression and still makes you feel every dent in him, which is a weird superpower. Ana de Armas as Joi gives you the saddest love story about a hologram you’ll ever see. Denis Villeneuve makes every frame look like a poster: orange dust, gray snow, huge empty rooms. Jared Leto’s villain, though, talks like he’s reading fortune cookies at a funeral, and the movie stalls every time he opens his mouth. It made $287.3 million worldwide on a reported $150 million budget, so not everybody had the patience. A 9.1 because it takes the first movie’s big questions and answers them with real feeling, and yes, I like it more than the original. Fight me in the comments. $474 says you pause it at least twice to screenshot a frame for your phone background.
What works: Every frame is gorgeous, and Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas build a quiet, aching story inside a huge sci-fi world.
What doesn’t: At 164 minutes it moves at a crawl, and Jared Leto’s villain stops the movie cold with every slow speech.
Who it’s for: People who loved the first one’s mood and want more of it, with a bigger canvas and an even slower heartbeat.
K comes to believe he is the miracle child born to Deckard and Rachael, then learns he isn’t; the real child is Dr. Ana Stelline, the memory designer. K rescues Deckard, brings him to meet his daughter, and lies down on the snowy steps outside.
Thirty years after the first film, K (Ryan Gosling) is a replicant working as a blade runner for the LAPD, tracking down older models who went off the grid. A job at the lonely protein farm of Sapper Morton (Dave Bautista) turns up a box hidden beneath a dead tree and a secret his boss, Lt. Joshi (Robin Wright), says could break the world. Replicant maker Niander Wallace (Jared Leto) wants that secret too and sends his enforcer Luv (Sylvia Hoeks) to get it. K goes home to his hologram girlfriend Joi (Ana de Armas) and starts digging. Denis Villeneuve directs. One hundred sixty-three minutes, orange skies included.
Anyone who likes their sci-fi slow, huge and gorgeous. Bring an umbrella, it's always raining.
