Keanu Reeves plays a proper English lawyer, and his accent sounds like it got lost somewhere over the Atlantic. That’s not the only shaky piece. Francis Ford Coppola turns Dracula into a doomed love story, and half the time the romance with Mina feels like a costume drama that wandered into a scarier movie. But what a scarier movie. Gary Oldman is wild as the Count, shifting from an ancient nobleman with a towering silver hairdo to a young gentleman in blue glasses to something much worse. His shadow moves on its own, a beat after he does, and it’s creepier than any monster makeup. Anthony Hopkins hams it up as Van Helsing with total joy. The costumes and old-school camera tricks are gorgeous. It made $215.9 million worldwide on a reported $40M. A 6.4 because the look is unforgettable and the love story can’t carry 128 minutes. $32 says you catch your own shadow on the wall tonight and hold still for a second, just to make sure it does too.
What works: Gary Oldman is a blast in every form, and the costumes and visual tricks make every frame look like a painting.
What doesn’t: The romance at the center feels forced, and Keanu Reeves’s stiff English accent keeps pulling you out of the movie.
Who it’s for: Fans of gothic horror who care more about mood and costumes than about scares.
Mina, still drawn to the Count, takes the dying Dracula back into the chapel where his story began. She ends his suffering herself, and as the curse lifts, his face turns young and peaceful one last time.
London, 1897. Young solicitor Jonathan Harker (Keanu Reeves) is sent to Transylvania to close a real estate deal with a reclusive, very old nobleman, Count Dracula (Gary Oldman). The Count spots a photo of Jonathan's fiancée Mina (Winona Ryder) and becomes fixated, convinced she is someone he lost centuries ago. Soon he is on his way to England, and London starts getting very strange, very fast. Eventually someone sends for Professor Abraham Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins). Francis Ford Coppola directs. One hundred twenty-seven minutes, big capes, bigger hair.
Anyone who sleeps all day and dresses formally at night. Garlic-free kitchens only.
