Busboys keeps forgetting its own plot, which is impressive for a plot this simple. David Spade’s Markie and Theo Von’s Steef are two broke guys tied together by a car accident from years back. The plan: after Markie’s proposal to Pam flops and she leaves with the waiter, they’ll grab jobs clearing tables, climb to waiter, and Pam will come running back. Then the movie wanders off. There’s a horde of rabbits on the highway, a trip toward Mexico that ends in a U-turn, and a stretch where the cops send them undercover into a high school as a practice run. Steef realizing he likes high school the second time around is the closest it gets to sweet. Tim Dillon plays the manager, also named Tim. Most of the humor is too crude to describe here. IMDb voters gave it a 4.1. A 2.2 because the friendship feels real and the jokes mostly don’t. $482 says the next time a busser clears your table, you thank them like they just saved your life.
What works: Spade and Von have an easy, lived-in rapport, and the undercover high school detour gives Steef a surprisingly sweet little arc.
What doesn’t: The plot keeps wandering off into random detours, and most of the comedy leans on crude shock jokes that land with a thud.
Who it’s for: Grown-ups who already love David Spade and Theo Von and would follow them anywhere, even into a dish pit.
Before Markie hit Steef years ago, his job was giving old dogs one last thrilling car ride, and with both of them in deep trouble near the end, he finally confesses that the dog, not him, was the one driving that day. Steef forgives him, Markie turns down the waiter promotion because the friendship was what he wanted all along, and Steef heads back to school.
Markie Montgomery (David Spade) and Steef Barn (Theo Von) go way back, and not in a good way: years ago, Markie accidentally hit teenage Steef with his car. Now both of them are broke and stuck working for a septic company. When Markie's marriage proposal to his girlfriend Pam (Charlotte McKinney) flops and she leaves with a waiter, he cooks up a plan. They'll become busboys at a restaurant, work up to waiter, and win her back. Tim Dillon plays the manager, Tim. Jonah Feingold directs. Ninety-seven minutes, refills included.
Anyone who's ever been told to clear table six. Bring a rag.
