Harrison Ford eventually turns into a giant red Hulk and tears up the White House, and even that can’t wake this movie up. Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson carries the shield now, without any super serum, and President Thaddeus Ross wants him to put the Avengers back together. Then a summit about adamantium from Celestial Island goes sideways when a song called "Mr. Blue" plays and several men, Isaiah Bradley among them, turn on Ross and his guests. Sam spends the rest untangling who’s behind it, and when the villain finally shows his face, the makeup gets bigger laughs than the jokes. Mackie and Ford are good and deserve better lines. Everything else feels stitched together: nods to other Marvel projects, a cherry blossom moment that thuds, effects that look rushed. It holds a 46% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $415.1 million worldwide on a reported $180M. A 3.9 because two good actors can’t fix a messy script. $873 says you hear "Mr. Blue" on an oldies station and change the station faster than you ever have.
What works: Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford both bring real conviction, and Ford gives Ross a weary gravity the material barely earns.
What doesn’t: The script is clunky, the effects look cheap for a reported $180M movie, and the plot assumes you’ve kept up with other Marvel shows.
Who it’s for: Marvel completists who need to know what happens to Sam Wilson next, and Harrison Ford fans curious to see him go red.
The mastermind is Samuel Sterns, who has been using "Mr. Blue" to control minds and slipping gamma radiation into Ross’s heart pills. When the truth comes out, Ross turns into the Red Hulk until Sam talks him down, and he ends the movie checking himself into the Raft.
Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) carries the shield now, and new president Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford) wants him to rebuild the Avengers. First, Sam and the new Falcon, Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), break up a deal run by Sidewinder (Giancarlo Esposito) down in Mexico. Then Ross hosts a White House summit about adamantium turning up on Celestial Island, and Sam brings along Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly), a super soldier the government treated terribly. The summit goes badly wrong, Isaiah gets blamed, and he swears he has no idea why. Sam has no super serum, just wings and a hunch. Julius Onah directs. One hundred eighteen minutes, one shield, zero superpowers.
Anyone who's had to fill some really big shoes. Bring your own wings.
