Half of this movie is a boy who doubles as a chainsaw taking swimming lessons from a girl he met in a phone booth, and it might be the best love story of the year. Denji, a teenage devil hunter, goes on a six-movie marathon date with his boss Makima, and they hate every film but the last one, which makes them both cry. A storm later traps him in that booth with Reze, a café worker who seems to really like him. Their after-dark swims and a night of festival fireworks are drawn with real tenderness. Then the movie remembers its title. The back half is one long, wild battle, animated so fluidly you forget to blink, and way too intense for kids. Skip the anime series and nobody explains who half these people are. It holds a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $162.4 million worldwide. An 8.6 because it breaks your heart and then revs the engine. $316.28 says you describe it to a friend as a sweet little rom-com and refuse to explain the chainsaws.
What works: The romance between Denji and Reze is sweet and sad, and the action is some of the most fluid animation in theaters.
What doesn’t: Newcomers who skipped the anime series get almost no help catching up, and the violence is far too intense for younger viewers.
Who it’s for: Chainsaw Man fans, and anyone who likes their love stories bittersweet and their action loud.
Reze turns out to be the Bomb Devil, a Soviet agent sent after Denji, and their fight ends with Denji chaining her to him and sinking them both into the sea. She decides to meet him at the café after all, but Makima stops her on the way, and in the post-credits scene Denji waits with flowers until Power shows up and he eats the bouquet.
Denji (Kikunosuke Toya) is a teenage devil hunter for Public Safety who can turn into a chainsaw devil, thanks to his little buddy Pochita. With Power on the mend, his boss Makima (Tomori Kusunoki) sets him up with a temporary partner, Beam, then takes Denji on a movie marathon date that reminds him he actually has feelings. Later, a storm sends him running into a phone booth, where he meets Reze (Reina Ueda), a girl who works at a café. He starts stopping by. A lot. Tatsuya Yoshihara directs for MAPPA, from Tatsuki Fujimoto's manga. One hundred minutes, one very confused heart.
