Jack Nicholson spends a big chunk of Chinatown with a bandage on his nose, and by the end it’s the least bruised thing about him. This is a slow, chilly detective story that asks you to care about water rights, reservoirs and land records, and the first half can feel like a zoning board hearing in a fedora. Then it closes around you like a trap. Nicholson’s Jake is a sharp, vain little operator who always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room, and the movie keeps proving him wrong. Faye Dunaway plays Evelyn as someone hiding something behind every polite answer. John Huston, as Noah Cross, is a rich old man with a friendly laugh and the coldest eyes in the movie. It made $29.2 million domestic on a reported $6 million. A 9.3 because it’s a nearly perfect mystery with an ending that hits like a door slammed shut. $941 says you run the kitchen tap tonight and wonder, for the first time ever, who actually owns that water.
What works: Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway are magnetic, and the mystery tightens so slowly that the final stretch feels inevitable.
What doesn’t: The first hour is dense with water department paperwork, and newcomers can lose the thread before the payoff arrives.
Who it’s for: Mystery fans who love a slow burn and don’t need a happy ending.
The trail leads Jake to Noah Cross, who has been rigging the water supply to scoop up cheap land, and to a family secret uglier than any land deal. Evelyn tries to flee through Chinatown and doesn’t survive, Cross walks away untouched, and Jake is led off by his partner and told to let it go.
Los Angeles, 1937, in the middle of a drought. Private eye J. J. "Jake" Gittes (Jack Nicholson) makes his living on divorce cases, so a job tailing water department engineer Hollis Mulwray (Darrell Zwerling) looks like easy money. Then the real Mrs. Mulwray, Evelyn (Faye Dunaway), walks into his office and makes it clear she never hired him. Somebody played Jake, and he hates being played. The trail runs through reservoirs, land records and a city desperate for water, and soon he is face to face with Evelyn's rich, smiling father, Noah Cross (John Huston). Roman Polanski directs. One hundred thirty minutes, bone dry and ice cold.
Anyone who reads every line of the land records. Bring a magnifying glass.
