Skylab comes down in 1979, a farmer in Western Australia turns a surviving chunk into a homemade museum, and that’s the smartest decision anyone makes in Cold Storage. The rest is a cheerful B-movie about a fungus waking up under a self-storage place in Kansas. Critics called it familiar, and it is: the beeping alarm, the sealed vault, the expert on the phone telling everyone to stay hidden. David Koepp’s script needed one more polish. The fun is the cast. Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell play Teacake and Naomi, two night-shift guards with zero training and plenty of chemistry, and they make bad choices in a way you root for. Liam Neeson shows up as Robert Quinn, a bioterror veteran with the weary face of a man who has seen this fungus before. Keep the kids away, because it gets gooey. It holds an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. A 5.8 because it’s a goofy, gross good time with a script on autopilot. $19.62 says you pick every mushroom off your next pizza and inspect it like evidence.
What works: Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell make a likable duo, and the film embraces its campy B-movie spirit with a wry sense of humor.
What doesn’t: The story is very familiar, and the script needed a sharper polish to be more than a fun, disposable creature feature.
Who it’s for: Grown-up horror fans who like their creature features short, gooey and goofy.
Teacake and Naomi plant a backpack nuke at the vault door while Quinn’s back gives out at the worst moment, and they haul him into Trini’s car and drive off just as it detonates. Quinn is hailed as a hero, but a final shot shows an infected deer still carrying the fungus out in the woods.
Back in 1979, a piece of the falling Skylab station lands in Western Australia, carrying something that came back from space different. Years later, Travis Meacham (Joe Keery), known as Teacake, and Naomi Williams (Georgina Campbell) work the night shift at a sleepy self-storage place in Kansas, and an alarm starts beeping from somewhere it shouldn't. Under the building sits a sealed vault, and it's getting warmer. Former bioterror operative Robert Quinn (Liam Neeson) gets pulled back in and heads their way. Jonny Campbell directs from David Koepp's script. Ninety-nine minutes, do not touch the mushrooms.
Night-shift workers who actually check the alarms. Mycologists, keep your phone on.
