Wile E. Coyote finally sues Acme for a lifetime of faulty gadgets, and the lawsuit is the weakest part of the movie. The courtroom maneuvering, plus a corporate conspiracy subplot, gets a little tangled for a cartoon about a coyote and a bird. Everything around it is a joy. Will Forte plays Kevin Avery, a TV-ad lawyer who settles every case because he’s scared of losing, and his turn from settler to fighter is sweet. Lana Condor’s Paige is the eager niece who actually wants the fight, and John Cena plays Acme’s slick lawyer. Making Foghorn Leghorn the company’s CEO is an inspired touch. Best of all, the movie understands that Wile E. never quitting is noble, not sad. Critics gave it 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences gave it an A CinemaScore. An 8.8 because it’s clever, warm and one of the best live-action cartoon mashups around. $867 says you order something online this week and read the reviews twice, just in case it explodes.
What works: It’s funny and full of heart, with a smart satirical idea and real love for Wile E.’s stubborn, never-quit spirit.
What doesn’t: The legal plot and the corporate conspiracy get more complicated than a story about a coyote and a bird needs to be.
Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up rooting for the coyote, and kids meeting the Looney Tunes for the first time.
At a congressional hearing, Foghorn Leghorn admits to the secret testing program, and the Road Runner testifies that he actually cares about Wile E., who decides to spare him. Acme’s bosses end up caught in Wile E.’s own trap and later arrested, and Wile E. goes right back to chasing his old friend.
Wile E. Coyote has spent decades failing to catch the Road Runner, mostly because his Acme gear keeps backfiring. One day he spots an ad for an Albuquerque personal injury firm that takes cartoon cases, and he walks into the office of Kevin Avery (Will Forte), a lawyer who would much rather settle. Wile E. would not. So Kevin, his niece and intern Paige (Lana Condor) and one very determined coyote take Acme to court, where slick company lawyer Buddy Crane (John Cena) is waiting. Dave Green directs. One hundred three minutes, billed by the hour.
Anyone hurt by a mail-order rocket. You may be entitled to compensation.
