Crime 101 has studied Heat like it’s the final exam, and at 140 minutes it wants extra credit for every page of notes. The homework shows: a careful thief, an obsessed cop, a city built on freeways, and a script that keeps adding side plots, like a detective drifting into a yoga class, when it should be tightening the screws. Somehow it mostly works. Chris Hemsworth plays Mike as a lonely perfectionist whose rules (no violence, no DNA, exit on the 101) start fraying the day a stranger named Maya rear-ends his car and he actually likes her. Mark Ruffalo is great as the rumpled detective whose bosses won’t listen. Barry Keoghan is a live wire as Ormon, the reckless biker who wrecks every careful plan. Halle Berry gives the passed-over insurance broker real bite. It made $72.9 million worldwide on a reported $90M. A 7.3 because it’s a smart, stylish throwback that just won’t stop talking. $17.97 says you merge onto the freeway tomorrow and plan your getaway lane like a jewel thief.
What works: Hemsworth, Ruffalo and Keoghan are all sharp, and the heist and car sequences are sleek, tense and easy to follow.
What doesn’t: At 140 minutes it sprawls, and side plots like Lou’s yoga class and failing marriage slow down the cat and mouse when it should be speeding up.
Who it’s for: People who love L.A. crime movies with careful thieves, tired cops and a lot of freeway driving.
Lou poses as the courier on Mike’s last job, and their standoff in a hotel wedding suite is broken up by Ormon, whom Mike stops before he can shoot Lou. Lou lets Mike leave empty-handed, pins the robberies on Ormon, slips Sharon real diamonds for a fresh start, and finds Mike has left him his green 1968 Camaro.
Los Angeles. Mike (Chris Hemsworth) is a jewel thief with rules: plan everything, hurt nobody, leave no DNA, and get out on the 101. Detective Lou Lubesnick (Mark Ruffalo) is sure one man is behind a long string of unsolved robberies, and nobody at the department wants to hear it. Sharon Combs (Halle Berry) is an insurance broker her firm keeps passing over, which makes her very interesting to a guy like Mike. Meanwhile a fence called Money (Nick Nolte) hires a reckless young biker, Ormon (Barry Keoghan). Bart Layton directs, from a Don Winslow novella. One hundred forty minutes, mostly in the fast lane.
Anyone who signals before changing lanes. Mike respects a plan.
