How Das Boot Performed
movie guru's TLDR

Most war movies give you a battlefield. Das Boot locks you inside a cramped steel tube for 149 minutes and never lets you stretch your legs. Wolfgang Petersen’s camera squeezes through the hatches with the crew. The waiting is the story: weeks of damp bunks, spoiled food and growing beards, then sudden fear when the depth charges start and the hull groans. Jürgen Prochnow’s captain is the anchor, a gaunt, quiet man with no faith left in the slogans, who still carries everyone’s lives on his face. The film is sober about which side these sailors served and what the war cost, and it never dresses them up as heroes. The honest weakness is that a few crew members blur together under the grime, and the young correspondent is more a pair of eyes than a person. It made $11.5 million worldwide. A 9.4 because few war movies make you feel the fear this closely, and none of it is glamorous. $2,644 says you finish it and notice how much room you have to stretch out on your own couch.

What works: The cramped, sweaty camerawork and the long stretches of waiting make the danger feel real, and Prochnow’s weary captain is unforgettable.

What doesn’t: Several crew members blur together under the beards and grime, and the correspondent who guides us in stays thin as a character.

Who it’s for: Patient viewers who want a war movie about fear and endurance, not glory.

Spoilers

The U-boat survives a desperate stretch stuck on the sea floor near Gibraltar, and the crew patches it together and makes it home to La Rochelle. Then an air raid hits the harbor as they arrive, and the captain collapses on the dock as he watches his boat go under.

Das Boot's Blurbs
About me:

Autumn 1941. The German submarine U-96 slips out of La Rochelle, France, for a patrol in the North Atlantic. Along for the ride is Lieutenant Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer), a young war correspondent sent to write about the crew. The captain (Jürgen Prochnow), a tired veteran the men call the Old Man, stopped believing the speeches from home long ago. The chief engineer (Klaus Wennemann) keeps the machinery alive. Werner learns fast that life aboard means cramped bunks, weeks of waiting, brutal weather and hiding deep underwater while destroyers hunt overhead. Wolfgang Petersen directs. One hundred forty-nine minutes, no room to breathe.

Who I'd like to meet:

Anyone who can sit through the quiet. History lovers, and people who do not mind tight spaces.
