A single power bank in the cargo hold brings down a whole airliner in Deep Water, and from that moment on, the movie has exactly one move: somebody goes in the water. It’s an unapologetic B-movie, and Renny Harlin, who once made a whole film about smart sharks, mostly knows how to make that one move work. Aaron Eckhart plays Ben, the first officer stuck running a floating disaster after the plane breaks apart on a coral reef. He’s solid, sweaty and very in charge. Ben Kingsley, as the captain, is pinned in his seat early, which is a waste of Ben Kingsley. The survivors include a brave kid named Cora, a selfish guy named Dan and a hothead named Hutch, and you can guess how most of their stories go. The shark attacks are tense but repetitive by the end. It made $8.1 million worldwide on a reported $40M. A 5.3 because it delivers cheap thrills and nothing more. $19.94 says you skip the deep end at the next pool party and blame it on a cramp.
What works: Harlin knows how to stage a shark scare, and Eckhart makes a convincing reluctant leader.
What doesn’t: The shark attacks get repetitive, the survivors are stock types, and Ben Kingsley is barely used.
Who it’s for: Anyone who watched Deep Blue Sea twice and has been waiting for Harlin to go back in the water.
Help finally arrives, but the helicopter rescue goes wrong, and selfish Dan doesn’t make it. A Chinese fishing boat saves the survivors by throwing its catch overboard to lure the sharks away, and Cora learns her stepbrother Finn is alive.
Northeastern Airlines Flight 140 is headed from Los Angeles to Shanghai when a badly packed power bank starts a fire in the cargo hold. An explosion rips through the cabin, and the pilots have to put the plane down in the middle of the Pacific. It slams into a coral reef and breaks into three pieces. Captain Rich (Ben Kingsley) is stuck in the wreck, so first officer Ben (Aaron Eckhart) takes charge of the survivors, including young passenger Cora (Molly Belle Wright). Oh, and sharks are circling. Renny Harlin directs. One hundred six minutes, stay out of the water.
Anyone who actually reads the safety card. Pack your power bank properly.
