Denzel Washington chases a car through traffic that isn’t there, wearing a goggle rig that shows him the same road four days earlier, and that’s the most sensible scene in Déjà Vu. The science talk around it is pure nonsense, delivered by Adam Goldberg like a guy pitching his podcast at double speed. Tony Scott shoots everything in his twitchy, oversaturated style, so even a whiteboard briefing feels like a car commercial. The romance is the weird part. Doug falls for Claire by watching her life on a giant screen for an afternoon, and the film calls it destiny instead of something to worry about. Still, Denzel sells every leap, Jim Caviezel is chilling in a small role, and the time window idea is a genuinely great hook. It made $180.6 million worldwide on a reported $75M, and it pulled an A minus CinemaScore. A 6.3 because the premise is a thrill and the logic collapses under one follow-up question. $51.99 says you get a déjà vu moment this week and briefly wonder if Denzel is watching.
What works: Denzel Washington’s steady charm, the inventive split-time car chase, and Tony Scott’s restless energy.
What doesn’t: The time travel logic collapses under any thought, and a romance built on watching someone through a screen is unsettling.
Who it’s for: Fans of glossy, fast thrillers, and anyone who loves drawing timeline diagrams on a napkin afterward.
Doug sends himself back in time, saves Claire and drives the bomb off the ferry, but he doesn’t survive it. Then the Doug from this timeline shows up at the dock, meets Claire for what is, to him, the very first time, and the title finally clicks.
In New Orleans, a ferry packed with Navy sailors and their families explodes on the Mississippi during Mardi Gras. ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington) works the scene and gets stuck on one detail: a woman named Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton) whose story doesn't fit the timeline. FBI agent Paul Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) pulls Doug onto a secret team with a surveillance system that can replay events from a little over four days ago, live. Doug starts asking questions the team would rather not answer. Tony Scott directs. One hundred twenty-six minutes, rewind at your own risk.
Anyone who has ever thought, wait, I've been here before. Doug would like a word.
