Before you buy a ticket, know that To the Hashira Training is a TV finale, a recap and a season premiere stapled together. For fans, that’s a great deal. The main event is the Swordsmith Village fight: Tanjiro, his demon sister Nezuko, Genya and Mitsuri, the Love Hashira, against the demon Hantengu and the rage-fueled versions of himself he sends at them. The animation is gorgeous on the big screen, with editing and music that land. The back half is much quieter: a new sword for Tanjiro, a temple that doubles as a doorway to Muzan’s Infinity Castle, and a meeting where the Hashira plan their training. It ends on setup, not payoff, and newcomers will be lost almost immediately. It holds an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and made $17.66 million in the US and Canada. A 6.3 because the big fight is stunning and the rest is homework for the next season. $28.94 says you binge the entire Hashira Training season at home and lose your entire Sunday to it.
What works: The Swordsmith Village battle is spectacular in a theater, and the editing and music make the recap feel like an event.
What doesn’t: It’s mostly TV episodes fans have already seen or soon will, and it ends on planning and setup instead of a real climax.
Who it’s for: Demon Slayer devotees itching to catch the big fight in a packed theater.
Tanjiro finds Hantengu hiding inside one of his own copies and finishes him at sunrise, and Nezuko steps into the sunlight without burning, even speaking a few words. That makes her the prize Muzan wants most, and it closes with the Hashira agreeing to train everyone while Giyu walks out.
This one is a big-screen event built straight from the anime. After a quick recap, it drops into the Swordsmith Village, where Tanjiro Kamado (Natsuki Hanae), his demon sister Nezuko (Akari Kitō) and the Love Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji (Kana Hanazawa), are mid-battle with Hantengu, one of the Upper Rank demons. Then it premieres the first episode of the next arc, where the Hashira, the top swordsmen of the Demon Slayer Corps, gather to talk about training. Haruo Sotozaki directs, with Ufotable on animation. One hundred three minutes, every frame a wallpaper.
Anyone who has seen every episode and still bought a ticket. Same.
