Getting bumped off a friend’s MySpace Top 8 is a full-blown catastrophe in Dìdi, and as a website that still dresses like 2006, we felt that one. Chris Wang, Dìdi to his family, is 13 and spending the summer of 2008 in Fremont, California. His dad is off working in Taiwan, his sister Vivian is about to leave for college, his grandmother has opinions about everything, and his mom Chungsing is quietly holding it all together. Chris films goofy videos with his buddies and works up the nerve to message his crush on AIM. The honest part is that Chris can be exasperating, rude to the people who love him and quick to pretend he’s someone cooler, and Sean Wang never lets him off the hook. Chungsing, a painter who set her own dreams aside, is the movie’s secret heart. Critics gave it 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. An 8.4 because it’s funny, painfully specific and lands right in the chest. $93.67 says you quietly rank your own Top 8 in your head before the credits roll.
What works: It captures growing up online in 2008 with uncanny detail, and the bond between Chris and his mom gives it real emotional weight.
What doesn’t: Chris is so prickly and selfish for long stretches that some viewers will find him hard to spend time with.
Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up on AIM and MySpace, and anyone who owes their mom an apology for being thirteen.

After a blowout fight in the car where Chris and his mom both say things they can’t take back, he runs away for a night. When he comes home, Chungsing tells him her kids are her true dream, and on the first day of high school he joins an art club and gets a friendly nod from Fahad.
Summer 2008, Fremont, California. Chris Wang (Izaac Wang) is thirteen, called Dìdi at home, and lives with his mom Chungsing (Joan Chen), his demanding grandmother Nǎi Nai (Chang Li Hua) and his big sister Vivian (Shirley Chen), who is packing up for college at UC San Diego. His dad works in Taiwan and sends money home. Chris bickers with his sister, feels like an outsider at school, and spends his free time making goofy YouTube videos with his buddies Fahad (Raul Dial) and Soup (Aaron Chang). Sean Wang writes and directs. Ninety-one minutes, peak 2008.
Anyone who ever spent an hour perfecting an AIM away message. Or two hours.
