Bond gets an invisible car in this one, and somehow it isn’t the silliest thing on screen. Die Another Day opens strong: a hovercraft chase through a minefield, then a grim stretch where Bond is held prisoner and comes out bearded and furious. Pierce Brosnan is great in that stretch. Then the movie goes full cartoon. A henchman with diamonds stuck in his face, a laser satellite, an ice palace, and Bond surfing a CGI tidal wave that looked dated the day it came out. The sword fight between Brosnan and Toby Stephens is the high point, a gentlemen’s duel that wrecks an entire club. Halle Berry has presence as Jinx and a script that gives her catchphrases instead of a character. Rosamund Pike, cool and sharp, is the best thing in the back half. It made $432 million worldwide on a reported $142M. A 3.6 because the opening and the sword fight rule and the rest melts like the ice palace. $9,586 says the next time you can’t find your car, you mumble that it’s probably just invisible.
What works: The hovercraft opener and the fencing duel between Brosnan and Toby Stephens are top-tier Bond.
What doesn’t: The back half drowns in CGI and gadgets, from the invisible car to the tidal wave surfing, and the villain plot is pure nonsense.
Who it’s for: Brosnan loyalists and anyone who wants maximum Bond excess in one sitting.
Gustav Graves is really Colonel Moon, the North Korean officer Bond thought he’d killed, remade with gene therapy, and Miranda Frost is the traitor who gave Bond up. Bond takes down Graves on a crashing plane while Jinx beats Frost in a sword fight of her own.
James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) goes undercover at a North Korean military base to stop a colonel trading weapons for conflict diamonds, and it goes wrong fast. He spends fourteen months as a prisoner before MI6 swaps him for a terrorist named Zao (Rick Yune). Back home, M (Judi Dench) suspends his double-oh status, convinced he talked under pressure. Bond is sure someone set him up, so he walks out on MI6 and chases Zao to Cuba, where he crosses paths with NSA agent Jinx (Halle Berry), and the trail points to diamond billionaire Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens). Lee Tamahori directs. One hundred thirty-three minutes, one invisible car.
Anyone who can get Bond a shave and a suit. It has been a long fourteen months.
