Audiences gave Die My Love a D+ CinemaScore, and it’s easy to see why: Lynne Ramsay’s film is so stylized and so jagged that it keeps you at arm’s length even while Jennifer Lawrence gives it everything. She plays Grace, who leaves New York with her boyfriend Jackson (Robert Pattinson) for a house he inherited in rural Montana. Their baby boy arrives soon after. Jackson is away for work a lot, the quiet gets heavy, and Grace, now a new mom, starts to struggle with her mental health in ways nobody around her knows how to handle. Lawrence is charming one minute and frightening the next, and it might be her best work. Ramsay finds a strange, dark humor in the bleakest corners. But the film treats motherhood more like an argument than a life, and some critics found its handling of postpartum struggles hard to accept. A 6.4 because the performance is extraordinary and the movie around it is a maze. $233 says you text a friend with a new baby tonight just to ask how she’s really doing.
What works: Jennifer Lawrence gives one of the rawest performances of her career, and Ramsay’s dark humor keeps the film from sinking into pure despair.
What doesn’t: The style is so mannered it keeps you at a distance, and its take on a new mother’s struggle feels more like a thesis than a life.
Who it’s for: Adult viewers who follow Lynne Ramsay or Jennifer Lawrence anywhere and don’t need a film to explain itself.
Grace spends time in a psychiatric hospital and comes home looking better, but the welcome-back party goes badly. On a drive she tells Jackson he doesn’t really see her, and the film ends on an unresolved, unsettling note rather than a recovery.
Grace (Jennifer Lawrence) and her boyfriend Jackson (Robert Pattinson) leave New York for a house in rural Montana that Jackson inherited from his uncle. Grace is pregnant, and not long after they move in, their baby boy arrives. At first the two of them are happy out there. But Jackson is gone for work for long stretches, the quiet gets lonely, and Grace, a new mother, starts struggling with her mental health. Sissy Spacek plays Jackson's mom, Pam. Lynne Ramsay directs, adapting the novel by Ariana Harwicz. One hundred nineteen minutes, no easy answers.
Anyone who knows a new parent who could use a check-in. Call them.
