Digger made $16.3 million domestic on a reported budget of at least $125 million, and that C+ CinemaScore says plenty of the people who showed up walked out confused. Fair. Tom Cruise disappears under a mountain of old-man makeup to play an oil billionaire whose drilling knocks a chunk of the Arctic loose, and he goes all in, yelling, preaching and bargaining with disaster like it’s a business rival. It’s the most un-Cruise thing Cruise has done in years, and I respect the swing. The problem is that Alejandro G. Iñárritu wants a comedy and a sermon at the same time, and the sermon keeps winning. Riz Ahmed spends most of his screen time being right and ignored. John Goodman’s President is a solid bit. Critics split right down the middle at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, and honestly, same. A 5.6 because big swings deserve credit even when they miss this wide. $574 says you leave the theater arguing about whether it was genius or a 128-minute dare.
What works: Tom Cruise commits completely to a role nothing like his usual, and Alejandro G. Iñárritu takes a giant creative risk on a studio budget.
What doesn’t: The satire is so heavy and pleased with itself that the comedy keeps getting buried under the message.
Who it’s for: Viewers who will take a strange, messy swing over another safe blockbuster, and anyone who wants to argue about a movie for a week.
Partway through, a prop breaks and the film reveals the Digger story is a stage play in its dress rehearsal, with Cruise really playing an actor named Curtis. Digger’s tale ends with him alone and exiled on an offshore platform, and the real audience walks out of the theater into a flooded, ruined city.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu made a comedy, and Tom Cruise plays an oil billionaire named Digger Rockwell whose Greenland drilling breaks off a piece of the Arctic the size of a bad decision. John Goodman is the President. Riz Ahmed is the scientist nobody listens to. One hundred and twenty-eight minutes of rich guys hoping the ice melts first.
Anyone who wanted Tom Cruise to play a jerk again.
