A cardinal flies into a Kansas City weather forecaster’s house, and on her next live broadcast she starts speaking a language nobody on Earth has heard. Great hook. What Steven Spielberg doesn’t quite know is what to do next. Disclosure Day turns into a long chase, with corporate agents posing as the FBI, a stolen archive of alien footage and a tone that swings between solemn and goofy without warning. The digital creatures look stiff. But Emily Blunt is incredible. Her Margaret is scared, funny and slowly realizing she can hear what people are thinking, and she carries all 145 minutes. Josh O’Connor plays the analyst who stole the secrets, and Colin Firth the polished boss hunting them down. A freight train escape is pure vintage Spielberg, and John Williams’ score lifts everything. It made $246.2 million worldwide on a reported $115M. A 7.0 because Blunt is a marvel and the script keeps fumbling. $8.63 says you watch the local weather tonight and listen very closely for any words you don’t recognize.
What works: Emily Blunt gives a knockout performance, the chase set pieces have real Spielberg snap, and John Williams’ score soars.
What doesn’t: The plot gets muddled, the tone lurches between serious and silly, and the digital animals and aliens look stiff.
Who it’s for: Anyone who grew up on Close Encounters and wants one more big-hearted Spielberg UFO ride.
Margaret and Daniel learn they were both abducted as kids and given matching powers, and that the aliens watch humanity disguised as ordinary animals. They broadcast the archive to the whole world, an elderly alien whispers a message to Daniel, and Margaret turns to the camera to repeat it.
Kansas City TV meteorologist Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) is in the middle of a live broadcast when she starts speaking a language nobody recognizes. The clip goes viral, and a secretive government contractor called Wardex takes notice. Meanwhile, cybersecurity whistleblower Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor) has walked out of Wardex with something enormous: decades of records on alien encounters, plus actual alien technology. Wardex boss Noah Scanlon (Colin Firth) wants it all back, and Daniel goes into hiding with his girlfriend Jane (Eve Hewson). Steven Spielberg directs. One hundred forty-five minutes, keep looking up.
Anyone who has ever said something on live TV they could not explain. Weather permitting.
