Disney spent a reported $336.5 million on this Snow White, and the seven dwarfs still look like they wandered in from a video game cutscene. They’re computer-made with rubbery faces, and every scene with them stalls while you figure out where to look. Gal Gadot’s Evil Queen has fabulous outfits and very little menace, delivering threats like she’s reading a spa menu. The new bandit love interest, Jonathan, is pleasant and gone from your memory by the parking lot. Rachel Zegler is the bright spot, by a mile. She can really sing, and her big wishing number has more life in it than the rest of the movie combined. The forest and castle look expensive, but they also look like sets, every tree a little too clean. It made $205.7 million worldwide. The IMDb crowd piled on with a 2.2, which is harsher than the movie earned. A 3.4 because one great voice can’t carry a whole kingdom. $8.31 says you grab an apple this week and hesitate for half a second.
What works: Rachel Zegler sings beautifully and brings real warmth to a heroine the script mostly hands a list of speeches.
What doesn’t: The digital dwarfs are distracting in every scene, the Queen has no bite, and the new songs fade the moment they end.
Who it’s for: Families with young kids who want a gentle princess musical and won’t mind the uncanny dwarfs.
Snow eats the poisoned apple and falls into a deep sleep, Jonathan wakes her with a kiss, and she leads the townspeople to the castle to stand up to the Queen. When the mirror names Snow the fairest, the Queen smashes it and is undone by her own magic, and Snow becomes queen with Jonathan at her side.
Snow White (Rachel Zegler) grows up a princess in a happy kingdom, until her mother dies, her father remarries and then rides off and never comes home. Her stepmother, the Evil Queen (Gal Gadot), takes the throne, squeezes the kingdom dry and puts Snow to work scrubbing castle floors. Each morning the Queen checks with her Magic Mirror on who is fairest of them all. Then Snow frees a bandit named Jonathan (Andrew Burnap), and the Mirror suddenly has a new answer. Cue the Huntsman, the dark forest and seven small housemates. Marc Webb directs this musical remake. One hundred nine minutes, apples sold separately.
Anyone who whistles while they work. Mirrors, please keep your opinions to yourselves.
